5 Tips for Rodent Control Chicago

Ready to cozy up for the winter? Mice and rats are!

Rose Pest Solutions Rat and Mice experts provide tips to protect against a rodent infestation

With cooler weather setting in, homeowners aren’t the only ones seeking shelter indoors. Rose Pest Solutions, America's oldest and most experienced pest management company, has been battling rodents since the Civil War. Right now, rodents are looking for a warm place like our homes to escape the winter chill. Unfortunately, these small pests can cause more than just a headache for homeowners if they gain entrance inside.

“Rodents can contaminate food sources and serve as vectors of many diseases, such as salmonella and the potentially fatal Hantavirus,” said Kyle Bennetts, Rose Pest Solutions Racine Branch Manager . “Moreover, mice and rats can cause serious structural damage by chewing through insulation, wallboards, wood and electrical wiring.”

5 Tips for Rodent Control Chicago

It's much easier to prevent an infestation than to get rid of pests after they've found a cozy retreat inside the home. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recommends the following tips to keep homes rodent-free this winter:

  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter, using caulk, steel wool or a combination of both.
  • Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
  • Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
  • Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly.
  • Inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home. Store them in airtight containers, even pet food and bird seed.

What if I already have signs of mice in the house?

Well, if you are already seeing signs of mice in the house, you could try getting your cat to do something about it, but that doesn't always go so well...

Bennetts advises homeowners to also be on the lookout for signs of an infestation. “If you find rodent feces or hear sounds of scurrying in the walls, contact a licensed pest professional to inspect the home for rodents.”

A Permanent Solution

If you're sick and tired of losing cheese or peanut butter on your old school snap traps, or you've invested in sonic plugin gimmicks or over-the-counter bait and STILL have problems year after year, it's time you trust the pros at Rose for a permanent solution. Our Exclusion Services will get to the root source of your rodent problem and stop them from getting inside once and for all.

Winter is in full swing. (I believe the correctly coined term for this winter in Chicago is Chiberia 2014.) While some pests go into hibernation during frigid temps, there are some that make more appearances because they're seeking warmth and food just like any other living thing. One of the most commonly encountered creatures during winter months is the house mouse.
